The young and highly talented Tamás Érdi enchanted his audience at a special Easter concert on 2 April at the Hungarian Cultural Centre.

We have already encountered several big names like Boris Berezovsky, who can conjure up astounding sound effects and almost orchestraic resonance from the piano; Martha Argerich, who through her fantastic virtuosity can create brilliant harmonies so easily comprehensible to the human ear; or Nikolai Lugansky, who is famous for his musical perfectionism.

One could go on enlisting the great names inscribed in the grand book of the music world, and today’s audiences tend to amend this list by the robot-pianists of the 21st century, who – while striving on forming the perfect sounds and maximizing their performance techniques – forget about what Hungarian piano artist Tamás Érdi evokes with his playing again and again: music itself. He is made special not only by his virtuoso piano technique and the precision of his performance, but also by his sophisticated hearing that he so generously shares with his audience.

He presents a previously almost undiscovered music realm to his audiences: the tunes he sounds – even on a piano in bad condition (like the one at the Lendava Synagogue) ‑ can almost be painted. Colours change with the changing of musical sentences starting from warm pastel colours to the brightest and most vivid colour scales in his piano performance. He never has two identical ‘brush strokes’: he basically represents each note and harmony in a different colour.

At the same time, besides its colourfulness, the composition does not lose its meaning, just like there are no two flowers in nature of the same colour, two leaves or blades of grass of the same shape, still they create an incredible spectacle when portrayed together. Tamás Érdi’s sometimes ethereal performance reminded listeners that music is a gift of nature, and we, musicians are only mediators who better not destroy it! And Tamás Érdi, the Hungarian piano artist with an incredible talent is a real mediator of this music.
